News Release
THUNDERMIN AND AUR COMMENCE DIAMOND DRILLING PROGRAM ON THE RLM BASE METAL PROPERTY, SNOW LAKE AREA MANITOBA
Toronto, Ontario, July 30, 2002…. Thundermin Resources Inc. ("Thundermin") (THR: TSX) announces that it has been informed by joint venture partner Aur Resources Inc. ("Aur") that a 2,500 m diamond drilling program has commenced on the Rod-Linda-McKayseff ("RLM") base metal property. The RLM property is located in the highly prospective Snow Lake mining camp in northern Manitoba where eight high grade copper-zinc-silver-gold mines have been discovered over the years.
During 2000 and 2001, Thundermin and Aur obtained a 100% interest, subject to certain underlying royalties, in the adjoining 1,079 hectare Linda, McKayseff and Rod copper-zinc-silver-gold properties. The Rod property hosts the past-producing Rod 1 and Rod 2 deposits that produced 0.7 million tonnes ("Mt") of ore grading 7.2% Cu, 3.0% Zn 14.7 g/t Ag and 0.9 g/t Au. The Linda property hosts the large, low grade, Linda 2 massive sulphide deposit that contains an inferred resource of 11.8 Mt grading 0.3% Cu, 0.8% Zn, 10.3 g/t Ag and 0.9 g/t Au. These properties have been unitized on a 30% Thundermin/ 70% Aur basis with Aur as project operator.
Thundermin is participating with Aur in a $550,000 exploration program on the RLM property in 2002. The main purpose of this program is to test the down-plunge extension of the Linda 2 deposit, which has been traced by previous drilling for 1300 m along strike and to a vertical depth of approximately 700 m. The deepest previous intersection, in drill hole FA-87, assayed 0.7% Cu, 0.7% Zn, 8.9 g/t Ag and 0.8 g/t Au over 19.9 m at a depth of 700m. This intersection represents a significant increase in copper grade over that encountered in shallower holes. The first hole of the current drill program is planned as a 245 m step out along the plunge of the Linda 2 zone. Depending on results, a wedge cut will be drilled from the first hole to intercept the zone approximately 55 m above the first intersection. Further drilling will be contingent upon the results of these first holes. Down-hole Pulse EM geophysical surveys will be undertaken to help direct the drilling program which is anticipated to take approximately six weeks to complete.
The Linda 2 deposit, which is the largest base metal deposit so far discovered in the Snow Lake camp, is a rod-shaped massive sulphide lens (or lenses) that plunges to the northeast at 20º to 30º, parallel to a regional anticlinal fold hinge. The massive sulphides are hosted within a moderately to strongly altered quartz porphyritic unit and are associated with an extensive, well-defined, discordant alteration zone. A down-hole Pulse EM survey conducted in hole FA-87 suggests that the Linda 2 zone remains open down plunge. A re-interpretation of previous drilling suggests that the higher grade intercept in FA-87 may represent a new, sub-parallel massive sulphide lens that remains open to depth.
Several of the massive sulphide deposits in the Snow Lake camp are characterized by their long down plunge dimensions and the fact that many of them have a massive pyrite component that can quickly change into high grade massive copper and/or zinc-rich ore within short distances. The initial hole in the current drill program has been designed as an aggressive step-out to see if the copper grade in the Linda 2 zone will increase down plunge.
As part of the 2002 exploration program, approximately 20 km of surface electromagnetic and magnetic surveys were completed to follow up untested SpectrEM airborne conductors and widespread massive sulphide style alteration on the Rod property along the projected Linda 2 horizon. Several conductive zones and isolated conductors were outlined during this survey. These conductors are currently being evaluated and prioritized for drilling in the future.
The 2002 exploration program on the RLM property is under the supervision of Mr. Don Dudek, Regional Exploration Manager for Aur and Aur’s qualified person.
